Levels

From ADFA: Audenshaw Digital Freedom Association

Jump to: navigation, search

Due to Digital Freedom being such a broad subject, with issues of varying by how technical and sometimes how controversial they are, we though it would be a good idea to have different member "Levels" depending on how much someone is involved in the project and how much Digital Freedom means to them. These range from HardHat - only a bit involved, through to Gnu - very much involved).

These levels are not supposed to guide a rigid structure, they are simply a way of identifying the projects that people are most likely to want to get involved in. If you want, you can take part in any of the projects.

The levels have been named after various mascots and symbols in the digital freedom movement:

Name Logo Explanation
HardHat Image:Hat.png Believes in freedom of speech on the internet, and also that DRM is wrong, or at the least so broken and crippling that it should not be used. The hard hat is a reference to the defective by design suits.
Fox Image:Fox.png Believes in web standards. Uses the Firefox web-browser because of its standards compliance, technical merit and maybe also because it is open source.
Gull Image:Gull.png Believes quite strongly in the power of open source and is uses open document formats for interoperability and future-proofness. Probably uses either OpenOffice or uses the ODF plugin for MS Office heavily. A person at this level is beginning to realise the importance of software liberty.
Penguin Image:Peng.png Believes quite strongly in the importance of software liberty. Is probably starting to use the freedom respectful GNU/Linux operating system. Sees the need the need to abolish software patents for freedomware to prosper and also to encourage innovation in general.
GNU Image:gnu.png Believes strongly in the importance of software liberty and uses as little proprietary software as possible. Probably tries not to use common proprietary programs such as Skype or flash. Is concerned about more obscure aspects of digital freedom, such as closed protocols and freedom of webbapps.
