DRM manages rights the same way prison manages freedom
-Wikipedia

DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a way to restrict what users can do with content (usually songs or video). It doesn't stop the "real criminals" and prevents things that are allowed by law!

It is a problem because:

  • It doesn't stop real criminals. "Pirates" can either find a way around it or get the media from another source (e.g. rip from unprotected CDs instead of downloading in the first place).
  • It stops legal use being made of the content. For example: playing it back on different devices/systems (particularly freedomware ones) or using and remixing portions of it under fair dealing law. See our DRM Story about this.
  • Invasion of privacy - The software used to enforce DRM is designed to spy on what you are doing with your computer and send reports back to the DRM "owner".

Due to the fact that it restricts individuals (much more than just the law!) invades peoples privacy and does not even achieve any real purpose by doing so (it is technically broken), we believe that DRM is wrong and needs to be stopped. It may simply seem an annoyance today, but things could get gradually more serious.

We need to raise awareness about the issue so that both individuals and governments know that it is a problem. We will do this by supporting the DefectiveByDesign campaign.
